Kud's and I Cans for 5th Grade Unit, U2.3 Life in Colonial America
These are my KUD's and I Can statements for the 5th grade unit on life in colonial America. They were written to align with the Michigan Social Studies GLCEs for 5th grade and include vocabulary terms to be taught throughout the unit. They provide an outline of the information students will learn throughout the unit. The kid-friendly wording of objectives in the I-Can's helps students to identify what they should be able to do upon completion of each GLCE.

Foldables
Foldables are a fun way for students to organize information. They offer hands-on activity and involve the senses in building a 3-D graphic organizer that students will be proud to show their families. Dinah Zike's Big Book of Social Studies for Elementary K-6 holds both instructions for making foldables and examples of how to use foldables in the classroom. The attached picture shows one foldable I would include as part of the Life in Colonial America unit. It aligns with Michigan GLCE 5-U2.3.1 :Locate the New England, Middle, and Southern colonies on a map. (National Geography Standard 3 p. 148) Click on pictures to enlarge.
Library of Congress Webquest
The Library of Conress offers hundreds of resources to help students explore history. Teachers can also find valuable tools to enhance lessons and incorporate primary sources into teaching. This webquest is an example of how to use the Library of Congress website as an assignment that will encourage students to learn about history through technology.

Geo-Diary
A Geo-Diary is designed to help students identify the five themes of geography in their own lives. Students take pictures of their daily lives, identify the direction they were facaing when they took the picture, and relate the image to a geographical theme (movement, region, human-environment interaction, location, or place). Many images can be tied to multiple themes. This sample is my own personal Geo-Diary.

Economic Mystery
An economic mystery helps students use the 6 core economic principles to reason through a scenario. Students gain a deeper understanding of how economics affects their daily lives. Students can solve mysteries chosen by the teacher before writing one of their own. This is a sample of an economic mystery I wrote.

Unit Plan, 5th Grade, U2.3 Life in Colonial America
This is a complete unit plan I developed for 5th grade social studies. It aligns with the Michigan GLCEs and covers U.S. history Era 2. Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to locate the three colonial regions on a map, describe daily life from the perspectives of various colonists, describe the emerging colonial labor force, and make generalizations about the reasons for regional differences in colonial America.
