Autobiography
I am passionate about education and believe in empowering all students by providing them with meaningful learning experiences. I previously worked in Special Education as a Resource Assistant for West Ottawa Public Schools, in Holland, MI. I have over seven years of experience working with elementary children with diverse intellectual, emotional, and physical capabilities. I have worked with students in all grade levels K-5. I have assisted students with cognitive impairments, emotional impairments, learning disabilities, autism, hearing impairments, visual impairments, and physical disabilities both in the general education classroom and in small group or one-on-one settings. I have modified curriculum according to Michigan's GLCEs and Common Core State Standards and have created supplemental materials for student use.
I am experienced in reading instruction using the following intervention programs: Read Naturally, Early Success, Soar to Success, Phonics for Reading, Road to Reading, Phonics and Friends, Six Minute Solution, and Leveled Literacy Intervention. I have also used math interventions, including Addition the Fun Way, Times Tables the Fun Way, and Touchpoint Math. I am trained in CPI Nonviolent Crisis Intervention and am a firm believer in using Love and Logic principles to manage student behavior. I have been trained in managing care for diabetic students and in using various physical and occupational therapy techniques to help students gain motor skills.
I am currently pursuing my Bachelor's degree in Special Education/Comprehensive Science and Arts for Teaching at Grand Valley State University. As part of my program, I am receiving instruction in all core elementary subjects. I have also taken classes that have shown me how to integrate music, art, theater, and physical movement into the classroom in order to stimulate different types of learners.
I believe education is truly a collaborative effort in which schools, students, parents, and the community must work together to create a successful learning environment for all students. I invite you to read my philosophy of education statement (below) to gain further insights into my beliefs about education.
"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." ~Nelson Mandela
