Literacy Position Statement
This position statement details my classroom theory regarding the development of literacy in students. It describes my general approach to teaching writing, how I will use quality children's literature to teach writing, and how I will use writing to teach children's literature.

Trickster Tales Unit
I developed this unit for use as a 3rd grade folklore genre study to align with Common Core State Standards. Mentor texts from various cultures are used extensively throughout my unit to encourage diversity. I have included accommodations for both special needs students and English Language Learners. The unit includes lesson plans and accompanying materials.

Writing About Literature
This project required me to read picture books and write creative responses to them in a variety of genres. I chose books that could be used to help students learn about the solar system. The responses were tied together with a narrative structure to create a cohesive work rather than just random responses. This type of project prompts students to think deeply about what they read and write in response to literature. My project is followed by a metacognitive commentary. This type of project could easily be adapted for use in multiple grade levels and would encourage students to respond to literature in creative ways.

Bear Snores On Reading Lesson
I created this lesson to use with first grade students during my tutoring sessions with them. These students had developed early reading strategies, with their primary focus being on the use of graphophonic cues. I wanted to help them develop other strategies by cueing in to syntactic and semantic cues. I also wanted to help them develop greater fluency through expression. The lesson incorporates modeling strategies through a read-aloud, practicing strategies through a guided read and an independent read, and word work.
